What Is an EORI Number?
An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is a unique reference number used by EU, UK and Irish customs authorities to identify businesses and individuals involved in international trade.
For every commercial shipment to Ireland, both the sender (Turkey) and recipient (Ireland) must have a valid EORI number. Without one, your cargo will be held at Irish customs.
EU EORI vs UK EORI
Post-Brexit, there are two separate EORI systems:
- EU EORI (starts with IE): Valid in Ireland, Germany, France and other EU members. Example:
IE1234567A - UK EORI (starts with GB): Valid only in Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales). Example:
GB123456789000 - XI EORI: Special for Northern Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland, as an EU member, requires an EU EORI (IE). If your cargo transits through the UK, you also need a UK EORI or your carrier's EORI may suffice.
Who Needs an EORI Number?
✅ Turkish businesses exporting to Ireland (recipient must have an IE EORI) ✅ Turkish businesses importing from Ireland (recipient must also have an EORI in an EU country) ✅ Individual shipments with commercial value exceeding €1,000 ✅ Any business transporting cargo to/from the UK
❌ Intra-EU personal shipments (used household goods, gifts <€45) do not require an EORI.
How to Get an EU EORI Number
EORI registration in Ireland is done online via Irish Revenue:
Step 1 — Open a ROS Account
Create a business account on the Revenue Online Service (ROS). You may need an Irish tax number (PPSN/TRN).
Step 2 — Apply Through the Customs & Excise Section
ROS → "My Services" → "Other Services" → "eRegistration" → "Customs & Excise (C&E)" → "EORI"
Step 3 — Upload Documents
- Company registration document (Turkish + notarised English)
- Tax certificate
- Authorised signature list
- Address verification
Step 4 — Expected Wait Time
Standard applications take 3–5 working days. Express applications can be processed within 24 hours.
Can a Turkish Business Get an Irish EORI Directly?
It's difficult for Turkish businesses to obtain an Irish EORI directly because the ROS system requires a local TRN. Three common solutions:
- The Irish recipient imports under their own EORI (most common)
- Appoint an Indirect Representative in Ireland (customs broker)
- Establish an Irish-registered legal entity (Ltd) with an EORI and import via it
At İrlanda Nakliye, our indirect representative service allows you to complete shipments even when no Irish recipient is involved.
EORI Validation
You can verify the validity of an EORI number via:
- EU EORI: ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/eos/eori_validation.jsp
- UK EORI: gov.uk/check-eori-number
Common Mistakes
❌ Mistaking a Turkish tax number for an EORI (T.C. VKN ≠ EORI) ❌ Attempting to import into Ireland with a UK EORI (invalid post-Brexit) ❌ Failing to verify the recipient's EORI before dispatch ❌ Underestimating the 3–5 day processing time and delaying shipment
